Shapes of Bauhaus

Construct your own Sculpture in the style of the Bauhaus School

Easily represent buildings, architecture silhouettes, forms of things or simply experiment on the wooden base landscape, or create the classic Small Ship.

Based on the elementary colors used by Alma Siedhoff-Busher in her actionable building kits, this is a rendition to the women of the Staatliches Bauhaus in their effort to bring the artistic movement down to earth, in an interactive an educational way that could shape the harmony of the present and the future.

Differently than with a poster, with Shapes of Bauhaus you have 18 Bauhaus-inspired geometric pieces to interact with to come up with a new and fresh artwork, every day!

Simply slide the pieces on the grooves on the wood basis, and create vertical or horizontal perspectives of all sorts.

Siedhoff-Buscher’s shipbuilding game at a 2016 exhibition in Tokyo.

In the year of 1923, four years after the foundation of the Dessau Design Academy, the Bauhaus School had its first exhibition to the open public. As part of this presentation, Alma Siedhoff-Busher designed furniture for the children’s room in the Haus am Horn in Weimar, as well as a puppet theater and children’s toys, including the ‘Big’ and ‘Small Shipbuilding game’. This construction toy was so successful that it was decided afterwards that it would be produced and distributed in various variations by the Bauhaus wood workshops, of which Alma was part.

It is, beyond a pioneering example of functional design based on simple geometric shapes (very in accordance with its time), a masterpiece with educational purposes for children to experiment with building and combining creative skills. It has a Montessori School toy feel to it, an educational construction toy character, and it is this purpose what the toy has been serving for the last +90 years.

You can buy a modern version of the original toy with 22 colored wood pieces on the Official Bauhaus Movement website here.
