Inspired by Alma Siedhoff-Buscher’s Kleine Schiffbauspiel “Little ship-building game”, from 1923 (which consisted of 32 coloured wooden pieces)

This is a rendition to the women of the Staatliches Bauhaus School in their effort to bring the artistic movement down to earth, in an interactive an educational way that could shape an harmonic conscience for the present and the future.

Simply slide the pieces along the grooves, put your skill and creativity at play in creating something new, and display your result.

Siedhoff-Buscher’s shipbuilding game at a 2016 exhibition in Tokyo.

Four years after the foundation of the Dessau Design Academy in 1919, the Bauhaus School had its first exhibition to the open public. As part of this presentation, student Alma Siedhoff-Busher designed furniture for the Children’s Room in the Haus am Horn in Weimar, as well as a puppet theater and children’s toys, including the ‘Big’ and ‘Small Shipbuilding game’. This construction toy was so successful that it was decided afterwards that it would be produced and distributed in various variations by the Bauhaus wood workshops, of which Alma was part.

It is, beyond a pioneering example of functional design based on simple geometric shapes (very in accordance with its time), a masterpiece with educational purposes for children to experiment with building and combining creative skills. It has a Montessori School toy feel to it, an educational construction toy character, and it is this purpose what the toy has been serving for the last +90 years.

You can buy a modern version of the original toy with 22 colored wood pieces on the Official Bauhaus Movement website here.
