  • fukt magazine issue 19 back FINAL fukt magazine issue 19

FUKT #19 – The Storylines Issue FUKT Magazine, one of the world’s leading, engaging and inspiring drawing magazine returns for its 19th edition. This new release, created during the COVID-19 pandemic looks at the art of narration in drawing.

Inside, you can expect to see a myriad of illuminating stories unfold both through drawings and interviews. Contributions from established artists Chris Ware, Toyin Ojih Odutola and Brian Rea as well as emerging artists Maria Paz and Xiyu Tomorrow among others make up this issue.

Founded in 1999 by artist Björn Hegardt, FUKT, which translates to “moist” or “damp” in Norwegian and Swedish, is a Berlin-based annual magazine for contemporary drawing. Each issue comes with a unique cover by Ariane Spanier who also co-edits and designs the magazine. From issue 16 onwards, the FUKT team began organising each edition thematically: from The Sex Issue on Dirty Drawings to The Words Issue and Fukt The System Issue.

Speaking of the current issue, Hegardt says: “In times of global threats — from the pandemic to climate change, senseless politics, and periods confined to our homes — we may long for stories more than ever. Stories that let us see the world through the eyes of others and help us to make sense of it all, allowing us to remember and to imagine, to understand the unfamiliar, the strange and unknown.”

The storyline has been interrogated in a number of ways throughout the edition, taking the reader on a journey from the mythical, to the sequential and the storyboard. For Hegardt, the thread that unites all of the featured artists is that “above all, they are people who create drawings with beautiful, surprising, funny or sad stories. Like always in our magazine, everything revolves around our beloved practice of drawing.”

FUKT has won multiple awards including D&AD Graphite Pencil 2020, D&AD Wood Pencil 2019 and was awarded cover of the year at Stack Awards in 2019. It has previously been featured on It’s Nice That, magCulture and Stack Magazines.

FUKT Magazine No. 18 - The System Issue

The latest issue in the publications’ 20-year history looks at the innately human desire to create systems and how artists across the world interpret this subject.  As it’s inevitable that we’ll deal with different types of systems throughout our lives, issue number 18 focuses on precisely this. Many artists create their own systems and methods; setting up rules for creating their art, sorting their materials, following specific schedules, creating new worlds. In a way, such structures provide us with a framework for stretching the possibilities of our creative freedom.

The System Issue features artists who comment and question the system surrounding us, as exemplified in the blunt, political cartoons of Jim Carrey. Politics is a recurring theme which can also be found in Pablo Helguera’s satirical observations of the art system and the Captured Project’s expose of the American judicial system. Systems are also to be found in our own body movements, illustrated through the expressive body drawings by Trisha Brown and Tony Orrico – just a few of the many artists operating along the fertile ground between performative dance and drawing. Other topics are robotic drawings, neuroscience and chess, together with extensive interviews with Julie Mehretu, Giorgia Lupi and many more.

  • FUKT Magazine No. 16 - The Sex Issue

The new issue features 23 artistic positions focusing on erotic contemporary drawing. FUKT #16 is presenting a broad range of different techniques and expressions: from Martin Skauen’s humoristic and explicit cartoons to Bettina Krieg’s abstract line drawings, we show a spectra of different perspectives. Some are more or less self-experienced like Ulli Lust’s comic reportage from a Berlin fetish club and Audrey Jones drawings of text message dialogues with guys she met through the app Tinder. In Paul Davis’ drawings the genitals are erased, where they should be it’s just a void, leaving space for fantasy. Enjoy!

FUKT Magazine No. 17 - The Words Issue - Written Drawings

The new issue is a celebration of words and their presence in the medium of drawing. In a time of fake news and populism, the word seems to have lost some ground and anti-intellectualism appears to be taking over. It’s more important than ever therefore to praise the written expression in all its forms – whether it’s been rearranged, cut, scribbled or even if it just looks like writing, all of which you can find here. In this issue we show some of Ed Ruscha’s word drawings, which earned him the status of one of the most influential post-war artists. Language similarly became a crucial tool for Sol LeWitt, who wrote out instructions to enable others to execute his drawings. For LeWitt, the idea of the artwork as expressed in words and functions is the essence of a conceptual work. You can read and, if you like, follow the instructions from LeWitt inside this issue of Fukt. You can also enjoy the mystery of the undecipherable Voynich Manuscript, get lost in Paula Scher’s sensible typographic maps or Mark Lombardi’s political diagrams and immerse yourself in the Prinzhorn Collection’s remarkable artworks – a collection produced by psychiatric patients. Read interviews with our featured artists such as Stefan Marx, Annie Vought and Suzanne Treister to learn why Marx hates Sundays so much, how Vought makes use of social media in her work, where the idea for Treister’s time travelling avatar came from and much more.

Mori The Wire Dog magazine rack in Black

A fairly original book stand, large model. Three colours available. A much bigger version of the original book stand. Based in the original Mori, dog of Ljung Kim, Korean designer of Studio ALB. For big books or newspapers. Mori is the real-life dog of Ljung Kim, Korean designer of Studio ALB. But it is also the object created by Ljung to keep your books half-read. Made with iron and with a leather strap, it’s nice and an excellent gift. According to Ljung, “The idea started from our real dog, Mori. She was an abandoned dog, found on the streets of Itaewon (a crowded place in South Korea). We took her to the veterinary clinic and had a few treatments since she was in horrible shape. It has been more than two years since Mori has been staying with us. Now, she is healthier than any other dog we can see. The name of the product and the image in the package are actually from the real Mori. Mori is always somewhere next to us. Sitting on a chair next to us, laying beside our legs, running and jumping to play with us whenever she’s bored. And I guess this item is kind of like our real Mori. Waiting for us, all the time… (but, wearing a book instead of clothes)”. Indeed, a unique and sympathetic design prowess – and very, very loyal.
